当处于拍卖季,你又有编辑写作的任务时,不可避免的一件事是,你会花许许多多的时间看拍卖报告。你会发现自己陷入了某种故障般循环播放的艺术市场台词,说着市场如何如何稳健发展,以及收藏家如何愿意“为最好的作品支付最高的价格"。当然你还会不自禁地看很多拍卖预览的图片,这些图片才真正占据了维恩图解(编者注:Venn Diagram,又称文氏图,英国逻辑学家维恩制定的一种类逻辑图解)中重叠的空间:在这里,乏味、时髦与奇特三者同时存在。

在这些由媒体机构所拍摄、提供,并用于全球范围内拍卖报道的照片中,最常出现的场景是许多安装人员正在搬画:这为本来极度沉闷的现场图注入了些许活力。如果是拍摄例如去年佳士得拍卖的达·芬奇的《救世主》等著名作品,则你会在照片里这些重要艺术品的四周看到表情严肃的保安,或者表情兴奋的专家们,以凸显其“重要性"。

但是,“拍卖预览"类图片中真正让人注意到的老套拍法是“一名女性略尴尬地站在艺术品旁作为尺寸参照"。这真是太古怪了,而且这样的图片还源源不断。

爱丽丝·格雷戈里(Alice Gregory)2012年在《n+1》发表了堪称经典的文章,其中详细介绍了她在苏富比奇怪的办公室文化中的经历,而恰巧文章结尾就讲述了某次一位摄影师要求她在安迪·沃霍尔的一幅《惊恐假发》(Fright Wig)前摆拍的这样一个场景:
